Sharpton: Georgia Result Shows USA Not Going Back to ‘Legal Apartheid, Segregation’

Posted on 06 January 2021

Did the Rev Al stay up a bit too late overnight, watching Steve Kornacki at the Big Board? The question arises because this morning, Sharpton made a statement so strange that it made you wonder about his state of mind. On Morning Joe, asked by Joe Scarborough to comment on the meaning of Georgia having voted "to elect America’s first black vice president in November, and . . . the Democratic party’s first black senator after four years of Donald Trump," Sharpton responded: "It means that this country has really come back unto showing that we’re not going backwards to the days of legal apartheid or segregation and divisiveness."     Seriously: WTH? Sharpton believes that if President Trump had won re-election and Republicans had retained the Senate majority, they would have enacted "legal apartheid" and "segregation?" Was it sleep deprivation, Al, or something stronger? Sharpton also taunted President Trump over the Georgia results: "I want to thank Donald Trump for being Donald Trump, because if he had not been acting in the asinine way he had, I do not believe we would have had the victory in Georgia. The fact that he is so bull-headed and stubborn, I think that he has aided and abetted the takeover of the Democrats of the Senate . . . No one could have messed it up like you did, Mr. President, and we’re going to be ever grateful for you."   Sharpton also said that the Georgia results show we're not going back to "divisiveness." Right. Because nothing is more unifying than accusing your political opponents of wanting to enact "legal apartheid" and "segregation." Note: before Sharpton spoke, Scarborough said that if Mitch McConnell becomes Minority Leader, it will be because Republican Senators like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley played into the hands of conspiracy theorists, QAnon types, and President Trump. Video at tweet. Al Sharpton suggesting that a re-elected President Trump, with a continuing GOP Senate majority, would have enacted "legal apartheid" and "segregation" was sponsored in part by Safelite, and Comcast. Here's the transcript. MSNBC Morning Joe 1/6/21 6:08 am ET JOE SCARBOROUGH: Here we have in the state of Georgia, a state deep in the heart of the old Confederacy, a state that voted to elect America’s first black vice-president in November, and a state that just voted to elect the Democratic party’s first black senator. What does that mean about where this country is after four years of Donald? AL SHARPTON: It means that this country has really come back unto showing that we’re not going backwards to the days of legal apartheid or segregation and divisiveness. . . .  I want to thank Donald Trump for being Donald Trump, because if he had not been acting in the asinine way he had, I do not believe we would have had the victory in Georgia. The fact that he is so bull-headed and stubborn, I think that he has aided and abetted the takeover of the Democrats of the Senate. At least to match them 50/50 with a tie vote to the first black woman and the first woman Vice-president. No one could have messed it up like you did, Mr. President. And we’re going to be ever grateful for you going out and ushering in a new day in America that brings us back to where we ought to be.
