President’s Publicity Machine: CBS Devotes Seven Minutes to Obama’s ‘Scary Powerful’ Aide

Posted on 17 April 2014

After devoting 15 minutes to a Barack Obama interview in the last 24 hours, CBS piled on with another seven minutes devoted to a “scary powerful” top aide. Charlie Rose offered a puff piece on Alyssa Mastromonaco, Obama’s deputy chief of staff. The CBS This Morning co-anchor on Thursday offered no tough questions and instead repeatedly underlined just how important she is. Rose marveled, “You know what somebody called you? Scary powerful.”

The co-host narrated, “We recently spoke to her about her low profile, high power role. Every time I read a piece about you, it talks about power.” Rose highlighted Obama’s alleged feeling about her departure, quoting the President: “I’m not going to let you go…unless you promise me you will be there for me not only during the presidency but in the post-presidency.” He followed up with Mastromonaco, saying of her post-White House days: “Is the most exciting time of your life behind you?” [See video below. Posted on 17 April 2014

After Morales touted Clinton’s comments to Fast Company magazine on the subject, fellow co-host Willie Geist proclaimed: “She is a very, very impressive woman.” Morales agreed: “She is.” Geist continued: “And she’ll do whatever she wants to do in life.”

Posted on 17 April 2014

On Wednesday, MSNBC’s Al Sharpton scoffed at the latest allegations that the White House is trying to cook the books on ObamaCare numbers by changing the census questions.

“I mean, who else is in this latest conspiracy, the Easter Bunny?” he quipped, in an interview with former Democratic Ohio governor Ted Strickland. He said those disputing the current ObamaCare enrollment figures were like “birthers” and “truthers.” [Video below the break. Audio here.]

Networks Amazed by Obama-Biden Selfie: ‘They’re Just Like Us!’

Posted on 17 April 2014

The network morning shows on Thursday were thrilled by Vice President Joe Biden joining Instagram on Wednesday and posting a selfie of himself with President Obama. On NBC’s Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie couldn’t contain her excitement: “Presidents and vice presidents, they’re just like us! The latest selfie racing around the web today.” [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

On ABC’s Good Morning America, co-host George Stephanopoulos hailed: “…the selfie craze has hit the White House again….Joe Biden set up an Instagram account overnight, sending out his first picture, it went viral immediately.” CBS This Morning co-host Norah O’Donnell gushed: “It’s being called the selfie to end all selfies….The White House Twitter account also posted the photo with the caption, ‘Pals.’”

CBS Devotes 15 Minutes to Obama Interview: No IRS, Benghazi or Health Care

Posted on 17 April 2014

CBS News devoted 15 and a half minutes on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to an interview with Barack Obama. Despite April 15th having just passed, correspondent Major Garrett offered no questions on taxes or the IRS scandal. He also avoided any queries on ObamaCare or the Benghazi terrorist attack.

Instead, more than four minutes on This Morning were given over to a horse race discussion on 2016. (Joe Biden joined the interview for that section.) Garrett did press the President on Russia and Ukraine, quizzing, “In your mind, is there a line, never mind the color, is there a line in eastern Europe or Ukraine, that Vladimir Putin must not cross?” After Obama paused as he formulated an answer, the journalist prodded, “Can you articulate that for the world and for the Russian government?” [See video below. MSNBC’s Bernstein (Purposely?) Confuses Budget Deficit with National Debt

Posted on 17 April 2014

MSNBC contributor Jared Bernstein pulled off a deft sleight-of-hand on Tuesday’s PoliticsNation. It started after host Al Sharpton played a clip of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) calling for fiscal responsibility: “If Washington is serious about helping working families or serious about getting families out of work back to work, then it needs to get serious about our national debt. How do we do it? First we stop spending money we don’t have.” [Video below. MP3 audio here.]

Bernstein, formerly Vice President Joe Biden’s chief economist, blasted Ryan for being “wrong on the numbers” (even though Ryan didn’t cite any numbers in the clip). He claimed:

Chris Cuomo Prompts Former Clinton Official to Defend Obama’s Handling of Ukraine Crisis

Posted on 16 April 2014

CNN’s Chris Cuomo tried to get former Assistant Secretary of State Jamie Rubin to defend President Obama’s response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine during a segment on Wednesday’s New Day. Cuomo cited how Russian President Vladimir Putin “did this in Georgia…..under President Bush” in 2008, and wondered, “Is it fair to look at this situation and say, the weakness or perception of weakness of President Obama has given a window of opportunity to Putin?

The anchor didn’t identify Rubin as either a former Clinton administration official or as the husband of CNN personality Christiane Amanpour. Interestingly, the State Department veteran didn’t give Cuomo the response he was looking for: [MP3 audio available here; video below the jump]

NBC Host to Jill Biden: ‘What Made You Fall for Joe Biden? Was It His Humor?’

Posted on 16 April 2014

During a hard-hitting question and answer session with Jill Biden on Wednesday’s NBC Today, co-host Tamron Hall wondered what made drew the Second Lady to the Vice President: “What made you fall for Joe Biden? Was it his humor? What was it?” Certainly not a question Lynne Cheney was ever asked about Dick Cheney on the morning show. [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

NBC Thrilled Bloomberg Using Fortune for Anti-Gun Push…After Fretting Over Too Much Money in Politics

Posted on 16 April 2014

In a glowing interview with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday’s NBC Today, co-host Savannah Guthrie touted the anti-gun activist’s latest crusade: “You’re putting $50 million into the effort….saying essentially this new group is going to borrow a page from the NRA’s playbook. The NRA has been very successful in frightening lawmakers who oppose them….You’re quoted in The New York Times this morning saying, ‘We have to make them afraid of us.’” [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Only two weeks earlier, NBC was wringing its hands over a Supreme Court ruling loosening campaign finance restrictions. On the April 3 Today, White House correspondent Peter Alexander proclaimed: “And you thought there was already too much money in politics. Fasten your seat belts. From now on, there’s gonna be a whole lot more.”

On Tax Day, Chris Hayes Sticks Up for the IRS

Posted on 15 April 2014

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes celebrated Tax Day by standing up for the IRS as the “cornerstone” of the federal government and lambasting Republicans for trying to gut the agency.

“Conservatives recognize that one of the only things standing between us and a genuine plutocracy are thousands of anonymous bureaucrats doing the basic work of enforcing our nation’s laws,” Hayes said, painting a homey picture of IRS workers holding up democracy instead of targeting Tea Party groups. CNN’s King Plays Up CBO’s ObamaCare Projection; Wonders Why Dems Won’t ‘Go On Offense’

Posted on 15 April 2014

On Tuesday’s New Day, CNN’s John King hyped the Congressional Budget Office’s projection about ObamaCare – that “yes, ObamaCare is expensive, but less expensive than they thought – by about $104 billion over 10 years. That’s a decent junk of change.” King asserted that the health care issue is “the big domestic challenge for the President and for Democrats this election year: that is…trying to defend it – you could say now, maybe, bragging – about ObamaCare.”

The journalist then expressed his bewilderment that Democrats weren’t playing up this CBO projection: [MP3 audio available here; video below the jump]

Excited Chris Matthews: Have Republicans ‘Given Up on Beating’ Hillary?

Posted on 15 April 2014

Barack Obama may have given Chris Matthews a “thrill” up his leg, but the MSNBC host is pretty excited about Hillary Clinton in 2016. Matthews was so worked up on Monday night that he wondered if Republicans have “given up on beating” Clinton. Unsurprisingly, the cable anchor is unimpressed with the current crop of Republican contenders.

After discussing Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, he derided, “Have Republicans on the right given up on beating Hillary Clinton in the center? Have they given up on beating her altogether?” Speculating as to whether Republicans think voters will follow them “all the way to the ticked off outskirts” of where Paul and Cruz live, Matthews disbelievingly questioned, “Do they really think America is ready for a dance in the moonlight with one of those guys?” [See video below. MP3 audio here.] The host later speculated that 2016 could be like the landslides of 1964 and 1972.

O’Reilly: Colbert ‘Built an Entire Career on Pleasing the Left,’ Conservatives Won’t Watch Him

Posted on 15 April 2014

Days after labeling comedian Stephen Colbert a “darling of the far left” and “ideological fanatic,” on Monday, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly again called out the David Letterman replacement: “Colbert has built an entire career on pleasing the left. And if you don’t believe me, check out the reportage on his ascension, the far-left web sides and writers are thrilled.” [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

O’Reilly predicted the Comedy Central host would have a tough time drawing viewers to the CBS Late Show: “So he has to compete with Fallon and Kimmel who are basically high-energy guys who want to have a good time on their shows. Be hard to fathom that 40% of Americans who describe themselves as conservative will watch Colbert, and that’s a lot of folks to lose from the jump.”

One Year Ago, Media Jumped to Blame Boston Bombing on ‘Anti-Government’ ‘Extreme Right’

Posted on 15 April 2014

On April 15, 2013, one year ago, two Muslim extremists planted bombs at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring 264 others. This tragic event was sadly exploited by some in the media who quickly speculated that “extreme right” and “anti-government” individuals could be responsible for the mayhem. [See below for a round-up, including video, of the worst examples of journalistic malpractice.]

The morning after the attack, Good Morning America’s Pierre Thomas narrated a segment with an on-screen graphic wondering, “Could this be homegrown terror?” Thomas noted that April 15th was only four days before the anniversaries of the bloody end of the Branch Davidian standoff and the Oklahoma City bombing. Regarding the date the attack occurred, GMA guest Mark Potok linked, “The real Patriots Day is April 19th. That is the date that counts for people on the extreme right in the United States.”  [MP3 audio here.]

Panicked NBC: ‘World Must Act Now’ to ‘Avert Disaster’ of Climate Change

Posted on 14 April 2014

Hyping the latest alarmist global warming study on Sunday’s NBC Nightly News, fill-in anchor Carl Quintanilla proclaimed: “A new U.N. report out today warns the world must act now to address climate change to avert disaster.” In the report that followed, correspondent Anne Thompson fretted: “The report says time is running out to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Melting ice sheets that will raise sea levels and swamp coastlines. Stronger heat waves and droughts that could put the world’s food supply at risk….The U.N. panel says the world must act now.” [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

A soundbite was included of the report’s lead author, Leon Clarke: “If we wait for more than about ten or fifteen years, we really make it extremely difficult for us to keep climate from changing substantially, and really, exposing ourselves to some substantial harms.” Thompson followed: “To protect itself, the report says the world must reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 to 70% by the year 2050 and be near zero by 2100.”

Big Three Ignore Case of Utah Mother Accused of Killing Seven Babies; Cover Bear Mauling

Posted on 14 April 2014

ABC, CBS, and NBC’s morning newscasts on Monday all omitted the arrest of a Utah woman, after the bodies of seven newborn babies were discovered in her house on Saturday. The Big Three morning shows did understandably devote a significant amount of air time to a white supremacist’s shooting rampage at two Jewish community centers near Kansas City.

However, the networks also set aside over two minutes each to a bear mauling in central Florida, and CBS This Morning and NBC’s Today also covered the so-called “blood moon” lunar eclipse. CBS’s lack of coverage of the murders in Utah is even more puzzling, given how CBS Morning News aired a news brief to the story: [MP3 audio available here; video below the jump]

NBC Hails ‘Fantastic’ New Liberal Policy From French: ‘Vive La France!’

Posted on 14 April 2014

The journalists at NBC’s Today on Friday rhapsodized over a liberal economic policy coming out of France. Regarding new rules that would bar some employers from e-mailing workers after hours, co-host Matt Lauer enthused, “[The French] get some things very right over there!” [See video below. MP3 audio here.

Co-host Savannah Guthrie praised, “Vive la France!” Al Roker deemed the concept “fantastic.” At no time did any of the hosts ponder whether this kind of problem could best be decided between businesses and their employees. Nor did they note the disastrous election results the country’s socialistic government just endured. Instead, the on-screen graphic declared “Freedom in France.”

Networks Fret Over IRS Budget Cuts, No Mention of Ongoing Scandal

Posted on 14 April 2014

On Monday, all three network morning shows found time to worry about IRS budget cuts meaning fewer audits and longer wait times for taxpayer assistance, but not one mentioned the ongoing scandal embroiling the agency, including Congress issuing a criminal referral for former IRS official Lois Lerner. [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

On ABC’s Good Morning America, news anchor Amy Robach warned: “More tax evaders could slip through the cracks this year….we are learning the IRS will have the fewest agents auditing returns since the 1980s due to budget cuts and new IRS responsibilities.” On Friday, ABC’s World News covered the same story – while ignoring the House Ways and Means Committee calling for Lerner’s prosecution.

CBS Touts Showtime’s ‘Groundbreaking,’ ‘Well-Done’ New Series Hyping Climate Change

Posted on 12 April 2014

Friday’s CBS This Morning set aside almost six and a half minutes of air time to promote Showtime’s upcoming series about climate change, which features liberal New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and CBS’s Lesley Stahl. Charlie Rose heralded the “groundbreaking new documentary series,” and let Friedman spotlight Arab environmentalists, who supposedly “understand that there’s no Shiite air or Sunni air. If we don’t protect the commons, nobody’s going to breathe.”

Rose, along with co-anchor Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King also turned to Stahl, who ballyhooed how “all these floods we’ve heard about – much more disastrous than they have been in our lifetime. That’s because the ice is melting. It’s affecting the seawater all along the eastern shore of the United States.” King fawned over the new TV series, and set up Friedman to speculate about “climate change skeptics” might react to it: [MP3 audio available here; video below the jump]

MRC President Brent Bozell Discusses Disparity of Network Shoe-Throwing Coverage on ‘The Kelly File’

Posted on 12 April 2014

On Friday night’s The Kelly File on the Fox News Channel, host Megyn Kelly took up the shoe-throwing incident with Hillary Clinton. “That was former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, dodging a shoe that was hurled at her during a keynote speech on Thursday. But this is not, of course, the first time that a political figure sadly has been targeted with flying footwear.”

She then showed the two shoes thrown at President Bush in Iraq, and brought on MRC president Brent Bozell to explain the disparity in media coverage. “And our next guest says the media’s reaction to these two incidents could not be more different.” (Video below)

Kiss Singer Shocks Journalist: Why Don’t You Go ‘Spend the Night With Your Ex-Wife?’

Posted on 12 April 2014

You don’t often hear interview subjects challenging prominent journalists on their ex-wives. But that’s what happened on Monday’s CBS This Morning. Reporter Anthony Mason interviewed Kiss singer and guitarist Paul Stanley on the band’s entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mason quizzed, “And when the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame asked the original members to perform together again, Stanley resisted. For old times’ sake, one more time, you wouldn’t want to do that?” Stanley retorted, “How many times have you been married?” After the reporter responded with “twice,” the rock star pounced,”How about for old times’ sake you go back and spend the night with your ex-wife?” [See video below. ABC Hypes IRS’s Help Line Wait Times, Smaller Budget; Yawns at Criminal Referral For Lerner

Posted on 11 April 2014

On Friday’s World News, ABC’s David Kerley pressed I.R.S. Commissioner John Koskinen about taxpayers who are unable to “get an answer as to how much they’re supposed to pay,” due to long wait times on the agency’ help line. However, Kerley didn’t bother to ask Koskinen about the House Ways and Means Committee’s Wednesday vote to refer former IRS official Lois Lerner to the Justice Department for prosecution, over alleged targeting of Tea Party groups for auditing.

In fact, as of Friday, none of the Big Three evening newscasts have covered the House committee’s criminal referral, nor the House Oversight Committee voting on Thursday to hold Lerner in contempt of Congress. Instead, the ABC correspondent zeroed in on taxpayers’ complaints about the IRS help line, as well as the commissioner’s YouTube video warning about how to deal with the poor service there: [MP3 audio available here; video below the jump]
