Bozell and Graham Column: Still Kicking Nixon Around

Posted on 05 August 2014

Earlier this year, former New York Times columnist Frank Rich wrote a trash-talking article in New York magazine begging conservatives to dig back into the Clinton scandals of the 1990s. Hillary is preparing to run for president again, and he thinks it will help. Rich delighted in “how inexorably the Clintons will seduce the GOP into another orgy of self-destruction” by focusing on Whitewater or Bill Clinton’s sexual harassments, making Hillary look again like “a victim of drive-by character assassination.”

While every Clinton scandal is automatically “old news,” even when it’s fresh news, somehow Watergate never fades as a liberal-media fascination center. It’s erupting again with the fortieth anniversary of Richard Nixon’s resignation over Watergate.

MSNBC’s Matthews Doubles Down On Absurd Call for Obama to Sue Congress

Posted on 05 August 2014

Monday’s “Let Me Finish” tirade was no once-off exercise in spitballing for Chris Matthews. The host of MSNBC’s Hardball picked up Tuesday night where he left off, his calling on President Obama to sue Congress for “failure to provide services.” And, once again, Matthews made a few factual errors, such as suggesting that the Senate had not confirmed Obama’s pick for ambassador to the Russian Federation.

This time around he was joined by liberal scribes Joan Walsh of Salon and Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post who promptly checked their intellectual honesty at the door and seized on the opportunity as an excuse to bash congressional Republicans for obstructionism. Below the page break you’ll find the relevant transcript (emphasis mine; MP3 audio here; video follows page break):

Israel’s Attacks on Gaza Have Killed as Many People as a Hundred 9/11s, Joy Reid Charges

Posted on 05 August 2014

It’s not hard to tell which side MSNBC’s Joy Reid is regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas over the Gaza Strip. During Monday’s edition of The Reid Report, she hammered the United States’s staunchest ally in the region over an attack on a United Nations elementary girls’ school that resulted in the deaths of 16 civilians — including several children — and injured more than 100 people.

During her “Reid Between the Lines” segment, the liberal host stated: “So far, the war in Gaza has left more than 1,800 Palestinians dead, the population equivalent to one hundred 9/11s — mostly civilians, and including women and hundreds of children — along with 67 Israelis, mostly soldiers.” She called these statistics a sign that “the U.N. is clearly not working.”

Obamacare: HuffPo Writer Whines GOP Won’t ‘Fix’ Law to Allow Federal Exchange Subsidies

Posted on 05 August 2014

Jeffrey Young is a health care writer for the Huffington Post but you really have to wonder if he is posting his stories from Bizarro World. He is actually upset that Republicans in Congress, in the wake of the Halbig vs Burwell D.C. Circuit Court decision, won’t join together with the Democrats in a giant kumbaya to “fix” the highly unpopular Obamacare law so that the language will clearly state that states using the federal exchange will be eligible for subsidies.

What is interesting is how liberals until about a week ago derided the idea that the language of the Obamacare law only allowed subsidies to go to state-based exchanges. However, this has drastically changed. Not only due to court decision but also because two of the biggest Obamacare cheerleaders who mocked the notion of Congress really intending what was clearly  written in the law, Jonathan Gruber and Jonathan Cohn, were discovered to have in the past supported that very “Truther” position. So here we have Young bemoaning the fact that those “stubborn” Republicans won’t save an unpopular liberal law:

David Limbaugh Column: Obama’s Unprecedented Impeachment Dare

Posted on 05 August 2014

Tell me: Has any other United States president ever goaded the opposition party to bring impeachment proceedings against himself? Has any other so sneeringly mocked and taunted the other party?

President Obama is not only not the uniter he promised to be; he is the agitator in chief. Just consider the contrast with President George W. Bush, who didn’t even defend himself often, much less deride, needle and dare Democrats to oppose him.

Walter E. Williams Column: Western Anti-Semitism Rages Again Beleaguered Israel

Posted on 05 August 2014

Navi Pillay, U.N. high commissioner for human rights, has accused both Israel and Hamas militants of committing war crimes in the Gaza conflict. Her harshest criticism, as well as that of most nations, has been reserved for the Israeli government, charging that it has committed war crimes in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions. In the wake of the huge difference in casualties and property destruction, many in the West have accused the Israeli government of making a grossly disproportionate response to terrorist rocket attacks. A New York Times (July 23, 2014) article titled “As Much of the World Frowns on Israel, Americans Hold Out Support” says that a number of “world leaders and demonstrators pointed to the lopsided number of Palestinian casualties — more than 650, most of them civilians — versus 35 on the Israeli side, 32 of them soldiers.” By now, those numbers have tripled, but let’s think about some of the arguments being made.

First, let’s take a historical look at proportionality in response to an attack.

NYT’s Court Reporter Takes Dictation from Liberal Justice Ginsburg as Front-Page ‘News’

Posted on 05 August 2014

The Supreme Court is still not moving fast enough to the left on social issues to please some liberals, and New York Times Supreme Court reporter Adam Liptak is on it. His latest front-page report, “Justices’ Rulings Advance Gays; Women Less So,” used a speech by liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as his launch point. Not once did he question Ginsburg’s liberal reasoning in his front-page article.

Liptak has previously described the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision as a defeat for women’s rights, without specifying what right was being taken from women. He has also suggested the U.S. Constitution as old and outdated for failing to guarantee entitlements and health care for its citizenry.

ABC Out to Lunch on U.S. Attempt to Kindle Political Change in Cuba; CBS, NBC Cover

Posted on 05 August 2014

As of Tuesday morning, ABC’s morning and evening newscasts have yet to cover the Associated Press report that revealed the Obama administration’s covert program in Cuba that attempted “recruit young Cubans to anti-government activism” on the communist-dominated island. The AP outlined that “over at least two years, the U.S. Agency for International Development…sent nearly a dozen neophytes from Venezuela, Costa Rica and Peru to gin up opposition in Cuba.”

By contrast, both CBS This Morning and NBC’s Today set aside air time to the scoop. NBC’s Natalie Morales gave a 32-second news brief on the clandestine program: [MP3 audio available here; video below the jump]

‘View’s’ Whoopi Goldberg Lashes Out at Bad Teachers, Liberal Outrage

Posted on 05 August 2014

View co-host Whoopi Goldberg on Tuesday lashed back at liberal outrage in the wake of her comments on bad teachers and tenure. On Monday, the co-host insisted that bad teachers should lose their job, declaring, “You teachers, in your unions, you need to say, ‘these bad teachers are making us look bad. We don’t want it!”…And it has nothing to do with being a liberal or a Democrat. It has to do with being an American.”

On Tuesday, the comedienne responded to attacks on Twitter and doubled down: “We were not talking about good teachers who do a great job. We were talking about getting rid of teachers who don’t do a good job.”  She lectured, ” My mother was a teacher. So, this is not about bashing teachers and I don’t appreciate you misquoting what we said.” [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Only CBS Mentions ‘Emerging Genocide’ In Iraq, NBC and ABC Ignore

Posted on 05 August 2014

On Monday night, only the CBS Evening News covered what anchor Scott Pelley described as an “emerging genocide” in Iraq. In a 48-second news brief, Pelley reported: “The Islamic army known as ISIS has seized vast territory in Syria and Iraq….Now, have a look at what they’re doing to the minority Shiite Muslims….In this video, Shiite men are herded together and executed in mass graves. Here, Shiite men are shot in the head one by one and dumped into a river.” [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Edited footage of men being executed ran on screen, in addition to clips of ISIS blowing up Shiite mosques. Pelley wrapped up the brief segment by noting: “The slaughter is spreading. The Iraqi government is battling ISIS with limited success.” No mention was made of the Obama administration’s handling of the growing crisis.

Liberal Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal: Barack Obama Has Broken My Heart

Posted on 05 August 2014

Liberal actress Maggie Gyllenhaal talked to Time magazine for the August 18 issue and complained about Barack Obama. After writer Belinda Luscombe noted that “you’ve said President Obama has broken your heart,” the actress derided, “I really believed in him, and I’m not sure what he believes in anymore.”

Asked why, she added, “The way he’s handled the NSA stuff…I hope for a leader who will stand up and be unpopular.” Offered an opportunity to take a position on the Israel/Gaza conflict (one that could be unpopular), Gyllenhall dodged, “What I’ve been doing is trying to read as much as I can and to think and feel each day what my position is.” The Time journalist chided, “You don’t worry that, as Desmond Tutu says, the neutral have chosen the side of the oppressor?”

Ed Schultz, Who Sneered at ‘Bastard,’ ‘Slut’ Conservatives, Now Decries ‘Vile’ Glenn Beck

Posted on 05 August 2014

Considering that Ed Schultz has been forced to apologize for calling Laura Ingraham a “slut” and for deceptively editing Rick Perry, one might think he would accept the apology of others who regret certain comments. On Monday, however, the Ed Show anchor mocked a contrite Glenn Beck, deriding the conservative’s regret over past remarks as not going “far enough.” [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Beck has apologized for “stupid” statements he’s made. With no sense of irony, Schultz berated Beck, snarling, “Running his mouth eventually caught up to him…Stupid doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of what Beck said.” The liberal host then played an extended montage of Beck calling Obama a “racist,” among other comments. An unforgiving Schultz lectured, “Glenn Beck’s submission didn’t go far enough as I see it. His commentary wasn’t just stupid, it was vile.”

NBC’s Guthrie Tougher on Ohio Band Director Than Obama Advisor Susan Rice

Posted on 05 August 2014

On Tuesday’s Today, Savannah Guthrie had an exclusive interview with Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice, but rather than grill the controversial administration official on a variety of international crises, the NBC host merely tossed softballs. Meanwhile, about thirty minutes later, Guthrie interrogated former Ohio State University marching band director Jonathan Waters on being fired over the group’s hazing practices.

Guthrie began her exchange with Rice by not even asking a question, just making a statement that “U.S. officials seem very, very confident” that the West African ebola outbreak could be contained. In her first real question to Rice, Guthrie simply wondered if the Israel-Hamas cease-fire in Gaza “will hold?” Finally, Guthrie worried that the ebola outbreak would overshadow a White House PR event with African leaders. That was the extent of interview.

Open Thread: School Candy, Bake-Sale Fundraisers Falling Victim to 2010 Obama-signed Law

Posted on 05 August 2014

It won’t be long until America’s school kids head back to class, and, before you know it, school fundraising season will ramp up with it, what with PTAs and marching bands and varsity football teams and the like trying to raise money their programs. Only this fall they’re doing so with the Obama-signed 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act fully in effect. As a consequence, in many parts of the country you can expect to see the death of traditional money-making staples like candy or bake sales.

Stephanie Armour of the Wall Street Journal has the story (excerpt below; emphasis mine). Consider this today’s open thread kickstarter. Leave your comment on this or whatever else in on your mind in the comments section:

Columnist: ‘Reform’-Minded Conservatives Will Rise After ‘Loony’ GOP Nominee Gets Trounced in 2016

Posted on 05 August 2014

Damon Linker, who opines for the newsmagazine The Week, thinks the so-called reform conservatives have a chance to pull the Republican party back towards the center, but predicts it won’t happen until after the GOP base — currently “gripped by a form of political psychosis, doing furious battle with ideological phantoms of its own creation” – nominates for president a “genuine right-wing radical” who’s crushed at the polls a la Barry Goldwater. “Only that kind of blowout,” wrote Linker, “will exorcize the demons that have taken hold of the Republican soul in recent years.”

From Linker’s piece last Wednesday (emphasis added):
