Stevie Nicks: If It Weren’t For My Abortion, There’d Be No Fleetwood Mac

Posted on 15 October 2020

Legend has it that seminal Delta bluesman Robert Johnson struck a midnight deal with the Devil at a deserted Mississippi crossroads. Johnson got his electrifying guitar talents, and “Old Scratch” got the young man’s soul. That Johnson was murdered young after just two recording sessions, and before he got around to categorically debunking the story only fed the legend. Turns out Stevie Nicks has a very similar story. Except in her case, we know it’s true because she recently bragged about it. Well, somewhat true. The legendary Fleetwood Mac singer told fans that the rock band’s music would have never been written if she hadn’t had her abortion. So Nicks’ would have us believe that her timeless classic “Dreams” was made possible by making sure her baby would never live to have any. One, that’s disgusting, and two, she’s lying, or doesn’t remember the 70s at all. In reality, Fleetwood Mac was already a successful band by the time she killed her baby.  UK outlet The Guardian published the callous statement from an interview with Nicks on October 15. Of course, the seventy two year-old singer had been asked to opine on current events, particularly the passing of SCOTUS Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and threat to “reproductive rights” that her court vacancy represents.  Nicks thought she could generate some sympathy for abortion, one of the pet causes of her “hero” RBG, by making the abhorrent point that we wouldn’t have Fleetwood Mac’s catalogue without her abortion. “If I had not had that abortion,” she said, “I’m pretty sure there would have been no Fleetwood Mac.” Oh well, in that case, you can take Fleetwood Mac and shove it you know where, Stevie. The singer added, “There’s just no way that I could have had a child then, working as hard as we worked constantly. And there were a lot of drugs, I was doing a lot of drugs — I would have had to walk away.” But when you consider Nicks had her abortion in 1979 – while she was dating The Eagle’s Don Henley – and then you realize that this was two years after Fleetwood Mac reached the height of their commercial success with their album "Rumors,” then it’s clear she was no starving artist desperate to make her big break. Fleetwood already had some of its biggest hits by the time Nicks had to sacrifice her child for the music. She’s full of it. Nicks simply decided that her life of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll was totally worth the abortion of her baby. After all, so much happiness and “healing” came into the world by way of her band’s music. “And I knew that the music we were going to bring to the world was going to heal so many people’s hearts and make people so happy,” she stated. That’s one rationalization -- calling it her “mission” to choose Fleetwood Mac over her baby. She added, “And I thought: you know what? That’s really important. There’s not another band in the world that has two lead women singers, two lead women writers. That was my world’s mission.” Can’t you understand, guys?! Well, no we can’t. Especially since Nicks’ point about choosing Fleetwood over baby is complete bull. In another recent interview, one with Hollywood outlet Variety, Nicks reflected on the election, making the cliche quip that she wished she could leave the country if Trump were to win re-election. She told the outlet, “Maybe I can talk Elon Musk into giving us a jet and letting me pick 50 people,” so she could get off the planet and into “space.”  Well by all means. Please do it, Stevie.
