The Red Sox Will Visit the White House, Including Manager Alex Cora — Who Has Been Critical of Trump

The Red Sox have accepted their invitation to visit the White House, including manager Alex Cora, who has been critical of President Donald Trump’s comments regarding Puerto Rico.

Sam Kennedy, president of the 2018 World Series champion team, announced their acceptance on Monday evening.

“We’re working through logistics right now,” said Kennedy. “We’ve got outreach from them and it would probably be sometime February, March, April. We’ve done it both ways. We’ve done the day trip from Fort Myers and we’ve done the start of the season when we’ve been in Baltimore. We’re just starting to look at that right now.”

The date of the visit has not yet been announced, but after their championship wins in 2004 and 2007 they visited DC after Spring Training.

Cora, who is Puerto Rican, expressed displeasure with the president in September over him challenging the number of casualties on the island from Hurricane Maria. He had lead the MLB’s hurricane relief efforts there in January.

However, Cora still plans to attend and says he will use his platform “the right way.”

“We’ve been talking about it, dates, and all that stuff, and I’m going to use my platform the right way,” said Cora. “I’m not going to embarrass anybody. I’m actually going to represent probably four million people from back home the right way when we get there and we just have to wait and see when we go there.”

Cora brought the World Series trophy to Puerto Rico in November to share the excitement at home. He is the first Puerto Rican manager to bring their team to victory.

While the team has officially accepted the invitation, the decision to attend will be left up to individual players.

“Like in the past, it’s an invitation,” Kennedy said. “It’s not a mandatory command performance. It’s a great opportunity for the players. It’s an invitation for the players, ownership, so it’s a great opportunity for those guys to go to the White House and get the behind-the-scenes tour and get the recognition they deserve for a world championship.”
