Several News Outlets Report ‘Millions’ at Egypt Protests; AP Almost Buries Story, Claims ‘Hundreds of Thousands’

Posted on 30 June 2013

The BBC is reporting that “Millions of protesters across the country accuse the country’s first Islamist president of failing to tackle economic and security problems since taking power a year ago.” Reuters is also reporting “millions” of participants.

At the Associated Press as of 11:15 p.m., its “Big Story” home page (saved here for future reference) had three stories on Egypt. Two of them were moldy oldies from before Sunday’s protests. The one from Sunday evening was buried at the bottom of the page’s “Latest News” section, and didn’t even have an accompanying thumbnail (Update, July 1, 1:15 a.m.: The story is no longer even present at all at the AP’s “Big Story” home page). The coverage by Hamza Hendawi, Sarah El Deeb and Maggie Michael only recognized “hundreds of thousands” of protesters, but at least seemed to admit that the protesters had gained some leverage by their sheer numbers:

At AP, Seven Stories in Two Days on Texas’s 500th Death-Penalty Execution — Since 1982

Posted on 30 June 2013

On Wednesday and Thursday, as seen in this search result at its national site, the Associated Press devoted six stories and a morning “10 Things” tease to the death-penalty execution of Kimberly McCarthy.

Make that seven, as an unbylined AP story which appeared at USA Today the morning after McCarthy died appears to have been replaced at the wire service’s national site by another during revisions. The “significance” of McCarthy’s execution was that it was the 500th in Texas since the Lone Star State reinstated the death penalty in 1982 — and of course, that a potential GOP presidential contender in 2016 happens to be the state’s governor. Maybe I missed them, but I’m unaware of any AP stories in the past few years marking the one-millionth U.S. abortion in any calendar year, or the 500th murder in any state. Excerpts from the report appearing at USA Today, complete with “grim milestone” language seen so frequently during Iraq War coverage, follow (bolds are mine):

Protective Priorities: Politico Has Nothing About Egypt on Its Home Page

Posted on 30 June 2013

As of 9:15 p.m. (saved here for future reference), the home page at Politico had no story on developments in Egypt, even though story teases on unrelated matters from Thursday and Friday were still present. A browser search on “Egypt” within the home page came back empty. As millions protest in Egypt, some claiming in banners that “Obama Supports Terrorism, the most important story this evening is “5 messaging challenges for Obamacare.”

In Jennifer Epstein’s latest story about President Obama’s African adventure, it almost seemed as if Egypt isn’t on the African continent:

Andrew Sullivan ‘Very Concerned’ Gays ‘May Become Intolerant of People Who Believe Homosexuality is Still Sinful’

Posted on 30 June 2013

Andrew Sullivan had a very interesting discussion with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Sunday about last week’s Supreme Court decisions involving same-sex marriage.

In light of the media’s almost universal support for the rulings and the way opponents have been routinely eviscerated, the most compelling thing Sullivan said was, “I’m very concerned, actually, that we may become intolerant of people who believe homosexuality is still sinful” (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Laura Ingraham’s Question for Wendy Davis, and the Austin American Statesman’s ‘Dems Energized’ Photo

Posted on 30 June 2013

After what Hot Air’s AllahPundit correctly predicted would be a Sunday talk show “master class on pro-abortion media bias” (a related NewsBusters post is here), it’s good to recall a question for Texas’s Wendy Davis Laura Ingraham tweeted a few days ago. I can guarantee you none of the hosts at the Big 3 networks asked the question on-air.

Also after the jump, the ultraliberal Austin American-Statesman, in what appears to have been a classic moment in ideology-driven unawareness, published a front-page photo today of Smith and fellow Democrats “celebrating” her legislative filibuster of a Texas law which would prohibit abortion after 20 weeks and headlining how they are “energized.”
